Big Bang Theory
A few weeks back The Big Bang Theory wrapped up it’s final episode. I was on the road and today I finally had the chance to catch up.
I admire them finishing the show at the top of the ratings (very Seinfeld-esque) and on the other hand, I’m disappointed they won’t be back. I think they wrapped it up really well! I’m going to miss it…
It wasn’t always that way. When I first saw the show, I hated the premise and I always switched the channel. The guys were bang on replicas of people I went to University with. My initial perception was they were making a derogatory parody.
One day shortly after breaking up with a woman I was dating (I found out she was seeing someone else) – I lay down on my couch and turned on the comedy channel. I needed something funny to cheer up – Comedy Television is my version of “Soft Kitty.”
The usual shows weren’t on – They were having “A Big Bang-a-thon” weekend marathon.
The episode was about half way through when I started watching: It was the one where they dressed as the Justice League at a New Year’s party at the comic book store and Zack replaced Leonard as Superman – just like Zack replaced Leonard as Penny’s boyfriend.
You could see Leonard still loved her and how much it hurt him to see Penny with another man. What I saw reflected the relationship I had just left – and it really struck a chord.
I kept on watching – and I fell in love with the show.
My initial perception – thinking the show was a derogatory parody of scientists – was off.
Big Bang had a special way of humanizing their characters and reflecting many of the challenges I have gone through. It gave me another perspective of my life. I’m thankful I had the chance to change my mind.
Like other comedy TV series’ (Seinfeld and Friends) – I’m sure there will be talk of a big movie re-union. 10 years from now that would be pretty sweet.
